Delayed

Damn it, I wish it hadn't happened this way, but we're delayed another month. Various personal issues across all involved have complicated things beyond belief.

Any way, it's still coming, just slower than I expected, which is really normal for my creative side.

I promise this isn't dead for those of you who're following this, just very, very, very slow.

Moves

Recording pushing back to mid-July, probably, and depending on mixdown and other factors, we'll share our first demo sometime between August 10 and 20. Link here, and if you're on my list of trusted opinions, you'll get an email.

First arc is plotted, now writing must begin.

However, complete sentences are evading me at the moment.

Forward

Rehearsal tonight went very well. The actors are beginning to inhabit the roles a little, and I'm learning what I want from them in terms of performance. It's hard to remember it's all in your head, and I can see it, but removing oneself from one's head in order to hear what's really going on.

Any way, it's all going very well. Recording first part of July, I think. You'll be able to hear by August 1.

At least, in theory.

Epiphany

Just realized this morning that while Knight's Tour is full of references and characters are based on various things, the base influences and inspiration on this work have come more from my increasing knowledge of how other creators work. Ellis, Fraction, Welles and others have recently said things (in Orson's case had things said about him) about how they work and why they chose a particular thing to use in a story. That's really what's been driving this whole idea. The Independents of Independence. These guys are the reasons I'm trying this venue.

If I can be half as successful as one of them, I'll be extraordinarily happy.

Just wanted to share.

Tid-bits

Below are a couple of bits I wanted to share with you regarding the test reel for Knight's Tour. They are offered without any comment or context. Enjoy:

MUSIC: Show theme swells up and continues under

NARRATOR: GREAT MINDS OF HUMANITY HAVE SPENT LIFETIMES EXPLORING THE MYSTERIOUS LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE. TRUTHS ARE REVEALED AS TECHNOLOGY PROGRESSES AND THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS GROW EVER SKYWARD. FORCES BOTH BENIGN AND INSIDIOUS WORK UPON EACH OTHER TO CREATE TENSIONS THAT CAN ONLY BE RELEASED NOISILY AND VIOLENTLY UPON THE GREATER POPULATIONS OF EVERY DIMENSION.

TONIGHT, THOSE FORCES GATHER EN MASSE TO CONSPIRE AGAINST ONE HUMAN LIFE THAT WILL BE THRUST FRONT AND CENTER INTO A CONFLICT IT CANNOT UNDERSTAND. MOVES WILL BE MADE AND SPACES OCCUPIED IN THIS CONFLICT THAT WILL UNIFY EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE INVOLVED.

IF YOU LISTEN CLOSELY, YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO PREDICT THE NEXT OPEN SPACE ALONG THE KNIGHT’S TOUR AFTER WE PRESENT “TWO DOWN, TWO TO GO”....

...........

ERIK: (groans) Oh, god…

ROSE: No, not god. Me. Now, you can make all the noise you want. This might take a while.
ERIK: (whisper) Why?

ROSE: Because there’s a very bad man in the back seat of my car waiting to kill me if I don’t take care of you. You’re collateral: a pawn in a much, much larger game.
ERIK: (grunts) Nuh, huh, no. Won’t ---

ROSE: Oh, you can’t stop me, Erik. And your friend Stuart? He won’t stand any better chance when it’s his time.
ERIK: Ungh. (gasps) St --- Stu ---?

(SFX: A knife into a melon. A slow stabbing sound.)

ROSE: Breathe. It’s tough, but you can if you try. You’re going to die by slow turns as you drown in your own blood. Look at me. (beat) Hey. Hey! Look at me. I’m going to go to your house next.
ERIK: Nnnnnngh! (coughs) No!

ROSE: Oh, yes. And if you think this is bad, I’ll do worse for your wife. Before I kill her, I’ll make her watch me take your children apart at the seams. (sweetly) It’ll be so touching, all of them together…

(SFX: A knife into a melon. A slow stabbing sound.)

The INbetween

Finishing the plot for episode 6, which is the end of the first arc. Will begin typing episode 1 when the plotting is finished.

Came up with novel way to present the finished product to the public when it's ready to go as a collection. Planning the delivery and the process for readying the delivery.

These are things that occur to me, and while no one is reading here yet, I'm safe to post these things...

Beneath, Between and Behind

Another rehearsal last night, with massive edits for clarity and brevity. With a few hours of typing, I have the final draft of the recording script for Episode #000 done and can move on to beginning the process for the first episode of the first arc. It is two-thirds plotted and the last third is not a nebulous mass in my head, there are notes that need to be refined. I'm starting to feel more like a real writer as this process unfolds. I will share how I'm working this out once I've got the plotting finished and the first half written.

The first arc will be six episodes long and is called --- no, I won't say it out loud yet. We need to get through this test reel, that I'm calling Episode 000, first. It may never see the light of day, or it may be released as an extra later on. It depends on the quality of the recording and the depth of the acting. There are a LOT of firsts for me on this project. I've never 'directed' actors, and I've never completed a radio play for air. I have 90% of the public elements in place (site hosting and such) but still, it's an approach I haven't done before, so I know I'm likely to forget something, which is why we're doing the test reel before proceeding apace with the actual show.

I'm jazzed about last night's rehearsal. I think I've got something that will fly like an eagle.

Accents, dammit

I have found an incredibly useful archive of accents for my radio work. Posted here for reference.

Teaser

Here you'll get the updated, easier-than-ever-to-watch Teaser for Knight's Tour:

We had the first rehearsal of the test reel this past week, and the script ran about three minutes too long. Not a bad place to be in, and one that's fixed easily enough. Two of the ongoing cast are pretty solid, and I am very pleased how things played out.

Further, at Planet Comicon yesterday, I floated the idea of this project out to a bunch of people and was rewarded with enthusiasm and interest. I think the plan may likely be something that will fly, but no more on that until after we're done recording the test reel.

There'll be more about Planet Comicon over at my LJ later today or tomorrow. Meanwhile, this week, I'm trimming script, rehearsing again and moving forward. It's slow-going, but I'm seeing progress. More soon.

Title Update

Yeah, yeah, it WAS called something else, but now it's called Knight's Tour. I told you I struggle with titles.

Updated teaser trailer here.

Moving Forward

Rehearsals for the test reel are being scheduled, cast is being assembled. Recording is arranged, sound effects are being collected and cataloged. Script is done.

I'm quite excited by the potential of all this. I think it will be something, indeed, to see. Except you won't be able to see it...

Go ahead and point, laugh

It's okay. It's my first effort at this sort of art. What am I referring to? If you're here, you probably came from there.

If you listen...

What is Arabesque? Good question. I'll answer you with a song, when I can find a place to host it.
